Argentina Simplifies Import Procedures of Electrical Materials

The Argentine government, specifically, the Ministry of Commerce, has implemented a measure to streamline imports of electrical materials bound for the domestic industry in a bet to address the issue of over 3,000 pending procedures that are hindering the incorporation of technology into the productive sector.

According to reports, until now, electrical appliances intended for the industry had to undergo a cumbersome certification process with the Ministry of Commerce before importation. However, with Resolution 61/2024 published this Friday in Argentina’s Official Gazette, these steps have been eliminated, and “access to goods that will now enter the country will be simplified, requiring nothing but a sworn statement of appropriate use, i.e., intended for industry and the productive sphere.”

As explained by the ministry, the new regulation streamlines the flow of imports and eliminates manual procedures that curb value to the industry, while “establishing an effective and transparent monitoring system aligned with international standards at the same time.”

The origin of the regulation

The measure was promoted by the Ministry of Commerce and the Simplification Secretariat under the Chief of Staff of Ministers as part of the first stage of measures to review outdated regulations and update, modify, and eliminate obsolete rules, in an effort to automate most certification processes, prioritizing consumer safety and product quality.

Commerce Secretary Pablo Lavigne emphasized that “this is another measure to reduce the impact of bureaucracy on the economy.” He also noted that “it represents an incentive for production and investment in the country.”

The regulation refers to equipment or material to be used with a nominal input voltage, for consumer loads, and/or output voltage, for generator loads, between FIFTY VOLTS (50 V) and ONE THOUSAND VOLTS (1,000 V) in alternating current, and between SEVENTY-FIVE VOLTS (75 V) and ONE THOUSAND FIVE HUNDRED VOLTS (1,500 V) in direct current, and to sources, chargers, and transformers as long as they operate with the input and/or output voltages provided in Article 2 of this resolution.
