Wilson Sons more than quadrupled fertilizers imports in March by Tecon Rio Grande. The product increased by 463% compared to the same period in 2020. In all, 169 containers were handled, the highest volume in four years for the period, against only 30 registered in March last year.

Brazil is the largest global importer of fertilizers. Data from the Brazilian Fertilizer Mixers Association (AMA) show that the sector had an average growth of 3% to 4% per year in the last decade. With the encouraging numbers of this year’s record soybean harvest, Brazil’s need for the product is high, especially in states like Rio Grande do Sul, where the grain is mostly produced.

Tecon Rio Grande has three options for handling this cargo: delivery of big bags, with the cargo being unloaded in the terminal yard and sent to the customer; bulk cargo, in which an adapter installed on the forklifts enables moving in big bags on the truck efficiently and quickly; and handling in bulk, tilting the container at the customer’s premises.

Tecon Rio Grande has encouraged the import of fertilizers via containers. In addition to better costs, importers gain more independence in purchasing their products, greater cash flow efficiency, and guaranteed lower inventories. “The fertilizer sector is growing, and the expectation is that it will follow this growth trend, despite the crisis resulting from the pandemic,” evaluates Paulo Bertinetti, CEO of Tecon Rio Grande.

Another advantage of importing fertilizers is the availability of empty containers for exports from Rio Grande do Sul. It is a fact that the greater the import, the better the empty logistics for the shipowner. In 2020, more than 550 disconnected reefer containers imported fertilizers, improving equipment availability in Rio Grande.
