Despite suffering from the consequences of a lack of space on ships and availability of containers since the beginning of the year, the national ornamental stone sector celebrated a 39% year-on-year increase in exports in the first two quarters of 2021, according to data from the Brazilian Center for Stone Exporters (Centrorochas), generating US$ 831.8 million in sales, having shipped 1.5 million tons.

Sales of marble blocks, sheets and other marble pieces have growin significantly compared to the previous year, showing an increase in the international demand for these materials. In August, the United States, one of the eight priority markets for operations by ‘It’s Natural – Brazilian Natural Stone’, a project resulting from the sectorial agreement signed between Centrorochas and the Brazilian Export and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil) with the aim of expanding exports of Brazilian ornamental stones on the international market, remained in the lead as the number one destination for Brazilian products, accounting for approximately 50.6% of exports.

According to data from the Ministry of Economy’s Foreign Trade Statistics Report, the most used port for the flow of processed materials in August was Rio de Janeiro (110,300 tons) representing 76% of all material sent to the international market, followed by the Port of Santos, responsible for 15% and 21,370 tons of the total. The Port of Vitória, in Espírito Santo, was responsible for 65% of the shipment of raw materials, at 42,570 tons of natural rocks, while Fortaleza transported 14% of the total at 9,400 tons.
