The State Environmental Protection Foundation (Fepam) is currently overseeing the response to an oil spill in the Port of Rio Grande. The incident occurred at 2 pm on Wednesday when the OMS XVIII vessel was conducting a barge supply operation at the Transpetro terminal. According to Fepam, a minor spillage occurred of approximately 5 to 10 liters of very low sulfur fuel oil.

Most of the spilled oil was on the barge deck, while a small portion reached the water but was quickly contained within the designated barrier used during supply procedures. The operation was promptly halted as soon as the spill was noticed, and an additional containment barrier was deployed to prevent further spreading.

Absorption barriers, including collectors, were swiftly installed to collect the spilled oil from the water. Absorbent blankets were employed on the deck, effectively directing the oil back into the barge’s fuel tanks. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the incident.

Currently, there are no visible traces of the spill at the site, with only minor cleaning required on the deck of the docked barge involved.
