The Harzand, one of the world’s largest gas tankers in operation, berthed at the Port of Suape. The impressive China-built ship measures 230 meters in length and 36.6 meters in width. Berthed at the 3B Liquid Bulk Pier, the vessel is bringing 52,200 tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to the local market. The ship was scheduled to depart on Tuesday night (4th) for Houston, Texas, in the United States.

The Singapore-flagged ship has a cargo capacity of 93,000 cubic meters. Built by the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), the world’s largest shipyard, the vessel was ordered by Petredec Global, based in Singapore. It is part of the Chinese company’s fourth-generation naval project to improve fuel efficiency and increase cargo capacity. The ship is powered by gas and dual fuel.

“The arrival of ships of this magnitude highlights Suape’s growing prominence in the international market. The LPG trade, particularly for cooking gas, has contributed significantly to the exponential growth in cargo volume handled by the port of Pernambuco. We hope to welcome vessels of this size more frequently,” says Marcio Guiot, the director-president of the state-owned company.

EFFICIENCY

Suape Port is a national leader in handling liquid bulk cargo, including LPG. In 2022, the port handled 17.8 million tonnes of cargo under this category, accounting for 72.1% of the total 24.7 million tonnes of cargo registered in Suape. “Our state-owned company plays a crucial role in supplying cooking gas to the Northeast region. We are known for ensuring port operations’ safety, providing qualified professionals, and offering ample storage capacity,” emphasizes Nilson Monteiro, the Director of Development and Port Management.

The cargo transfer between ships, ship-to-ship operations, occurs via a stationary vessel at the Pernambuco port called the Sinndar. Transpetro, a subsidiary of Petrobras, currently manages this operation.
