The first three months of the year have been highly positive for the Port of Sao Francisco do Sul, which has been setting successive records in cargo throughput since the beginning of 2023.

Between January and March, 4.5 million tons passed through the terminal located in Northern Santa Catarina, a 20% increase compared to the same period last year, when 3.75 million tons of goods were handled.

Exports accounted for 58% of the cargo (2.6 million tons), driven by the shipment of soybeans (1.6 million) and corn (900 thousand tons).

Imports, on the other hand, reached 1.9 million tons, equivalent to 42% of the quarter’s movement. The main products were steel derivatives (1 million) and fertilizers (591 thousand tons).

Soybeans lead the charge

The figures for the first three months of 2024 were confirmed after the port authority released March’s throughput (1.6 million tons) this week, 19.5% more than the same month last year (1.3 million).

Soybean shipments reached 927 thousand tons, nearly all of the exports (947 thousand tons), as there was no movement of corn in March.

The chart below shows which were the most exported products from the Port of Sao Francisco do Sul. The data covers January and February 2024 and were extracted from Datamar’s maritime intelligence service DataLiner.

According to the president of the Port, Cleverton Vieira, the steady growth in cargo volume handled by São Francisco brings new challenges, such as ensuring the proper maintenance of the terrestrial and aquatic infrastructures under the port authority’s responsibility.

“To achieve this, we are promoting new investments, such as the execution of the rock blasting work at Berth 101, the recovery of the structure of Berth 201, and the development of the engineering project for the maintenance dredging of the port access channel,” says Vieira, highlighting investments already contracted in security equipment and information technology amounting to R$ 21 million.

According to the state secretary of Ports, Airports, and Railways, Beto Martins, the Port of São Francisco continues to demonstrate its importance to the logistics of Santa Catarina and Brazil. “This result follows the growth of the commodities market and inputs for the industry. These are numbers that leave the Santa Catarina government satisfied and proud of the work being done.”
