“The last dredging carried out at the Port of Recife was in 2012. Since 2015 we are fighting for new dredging, but all we ever had were promises from the Federal Government. The signing of these formal agreements tell us that the work will, in fact, be done, and we have reason to celebrate last year’s achievements and have high expectations for 2020,” said Carlos Vilar, president of the Port of Recife.

2019 Balance – The Port of Recife grew 15% in 2019 growth compared to 2018, with throughput up to 1,412,426 tons.

Barley malt was the most prominent product in the Port of Recife with 232,785 tonnes of the product discharged, up 57% compared to 2018. The discharging of 221,140 tons of fertilizer was also a marked increase, up 47% compared to last year. Thirdly, petroleum coke further helped increase throughput posting a 43% increase with 193,837 tons handled.

Forecast cargo handling in 2020 is even higher, as the expected works will provide improved berthing conditions, attracting new private investments and, consequently, new cargoes. Barley and barley malt imports are expected to increase further this year. The port is also working to attract new cargoes such as Ilmenita, an iron ore extracted from a deposit in Floresta, in Pernambuco’s hinterland.
