Wilson Sons reducing greenhouse gases emissions from its tugboats

Wilson Sons is incorporating the IMO TIER III standard, reducing emission levels of nitrogen oxides by more than 75% in the company’s four tugboats being built at the Group’s shipyard in Guarujá. The total cost to implement the IMO Tier III standards is USD 290,000.

The first tug built with this standard should begin operating in February of next year and the second in August. The project is by DamenShipyards, a Wilson Sons partner for more than 25 years, and the vessels will have 80 tons of static traction (TBP) and will measure 25 meters in length and 13 meters in width, with the “Escort Tug” class notation.

Using this technology, the new tugs will comply with the requirements of some regions of the North American and European markets, as determined by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) emission control areas.

In these projects, Wilson Sons will also use another pioneering technology in the market, the “twin fin,” a set of keels that increases the drag capacity during maneuvers and improves the tug’s performance. Thus, for the same traction, less power is required, and, consequently, there is a reduction in fuel consumption and emissions. Recently, the company became a member of the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP).
