Public company Portos do Paraná shipped a 15-meter-long piece at the Port of Paranaguá this Wednesday (22): the largest indivisible part of an autoclave, measuring 15 meters in length, 7 meters in width, 5 meters in height, and weighing 108 tons. It departed from the city of Erechim, in Rio Grande do Sul, on a truck attached to a platform with 14 axles, pulled by tractor trucks.

According to the operations director of Portos do Paraná, Gabriel Vieira, this is not the first operation of its kind at the Port of Paranaguá, but still planning was required. “The operation to load this large equipment has been planned for months and involved both the operations and port security teams, maritime agency, federal highway police, and municipal authorities,” explains Vieira.

The cargo in question is defined as project cargo: material that has measurements, dimensions, and weight that outsize standard containers. “It is very gratifying to be able to run an operation with a cargo of this size; it signals the trust of operators and customers in the Port of Paranaguá. Additionally, it highlights our ability to handle not only bulk or containers but also project cargo, which is an important segment for us,” emphasizes Vieira.

Fernando Pinheiro Dias, the manager overseeing port operations, highlighted the need for specific preparations. This included coordinating the loading operation, involving tasks like removing ship protection fenders and ensuring seamless integration within the operational team. The subsequent phase encompassed crucial steps such as docking the barge, managing internal movements, and loading the cargo. It also marked the commencement of lashing procedures, involving the meticulous mooring of the autoclave using specialized equipment to guarantee stability and safety throughout the entire journey. The concluding phase involved the completion of the cargo preparations for its shipment to the designated destination, a process successfully executed on Wednesday.

To receive the autoclave at the Port of Paranaguá, a mega-operation was carried out earlier this month. The safe movement across the city involved port security, Copel, telephone companies, and the Federal Highway Police (PRF). To ensure the safe passage of the cargo, it was necessary to close roads and hoist wires, as well as remove pillars and beams driven into the central median. The convoy accessed the port area through the special cargo gate, which stored the autoclave in the retro area of berth 214. After arriving at the Port of Paranaguá, several more days of operation were required.
