TCP, the company that manages the Paranaguá Container Terminal, handled 1,840 TEUs of sugar between January and August 2023. This volume represents a staggering increase of 4,500% compared to the same period in 2022, which saw only 40 TEUs. The primary source of the exported cargo through TCP is the state of São Paulo (60%), with its destination primarily in the African continent (52%).

According to data from the Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade, and Services, by the third week of July this year, Brazil had already exported more than 13.24 million tons of sugar, generating a foreign exchange revenue of US$ 6.27 billion.

Adverse weather conditions faced by other sugar suppliers, such as India, have also boosted the export numbers of this commodity. “We expect to maintain this performance in the coming months,” said Giovanni Guidolim, the Commercial, Logistics, and Customer Service Manager.

One of the significant reasons for the substantial increase in sugar exports via containers is the reduced maritime freight cost, which recorded a drop of approximately 60% compared to 2022, making the operation more profitable. Another advantage of exporting the product via containers is the flexibility offered by this mode of transportation. In addition to enabling more controlled batch formation, containers can be stored for free (free time) for up to seven days at the terminal in export operations.

“Thanks to TCP’s partnership with various warehouses located in the terminal’s back area, we can provide excellent and strategic services for quality customer service, such as product storage, container stuffing, and lot verification,” explained Guidolim.

The transport of sugar via containers also allows the cargo to be exported fractionally, with facilitated loading and unloading, as it is not affected by climatic variations that may occur in port cities, which can hinder operations in the break-bulk mode (when cargo is transported in the ship’s hold).

TCP Achieves the Milestone of 16 Million Containers Handled

In the last week of August, TCP reached a historic milestone by handling 16 million TEUs. In the first seven months of 2023, meat and frozen product exports were prominent, followed by agricultural commodities. In imports, consumer goods and electronics led the way, followed by the automotive sector. This result was achieved over 25 years of the terminal’s operation in Paraná.
