The eleven terminals that make up the Port of Paranagua’s East Export Corridor (Corex) have seen a volume of 17,044,590 tonnes of gains and meals in 2022. The year-to-date grain movement from January to November is 11.73% higher than last year, which was 15,254,687 tonnes.

The number of ships that docked to transport soybeans, soy meal, wheat, corn, and corn meal also grew: 292 vessels, 26 more than in the same period of 2021.

“Even with the recent rains in the south of Brazil, we were able to meet the market’s demand and keep up the pace of exports. The Port of Paranaguá is not paralyzed and has no ship or truck queue,” said Luiz Fernando Garcia, CEO of Portos do Paraná, the state port authority.

In November alone, 1,131,523 tonnes of soybeans, soy meal, and corn were shipped through the complex. The number is 6.43% higher than in November 2021, when 1,058,774 tonnes were sent off.

Products – The volume of corn exports grew the most. In 11 months, Correx terminals handled a volume of 4,235,653 tonnes, up 83% from the same period last year (714,464 tonnes).

In November alone, the increase was 752%. There were 61,216 tonnes in the eleventh month of 2021 and 521,601 this year.

Shipments of corn meal, at 55,513 tonnes, were a first-time operation at the port. Last year there were no such shipments from Paranagua.

Weather – When considering the adverse weather conditions that affected bulk shipments, the corridor results garner even more attention. Rain caused an average of 99.4 days of stoppage in Corex from January to November. In addition, there were 10.5 days with closed holds in the last month alone.

In 2021, there were 96.8 days with no operations in 11 months, with 9.8 in November alone.

“When we talk about the average number of days halted, we’re talking about the total time the ships’ holds were closed due to rain. The total is calculated in minutes and divided by 24 hours,” Garcia explains.

According to data from the port authority’s meteorological station, the total rainfall accumulated in the Port of Paranaguá reached 2,169 millimeters this year. In November alone, there were 291 millimeters.

For comparison, in 2021, INMET (National Institute of Meteorology) recorded 1,463 millimeters of precipitation, with 203.7 of them in November.
