FS, one the largest ethanol producers in Brazil, joined forces with the VLI rail operator to inaugurate a new route for transporting corn ethanol. In it, 870 cubic meters of the fuel left the city of Porto Nacional, in Tocantins, to the Port of Itaqui, in the state of Maranhao. By doing so, FS gains access to a part of the Brazilian northeast that hadn’t been reached by the company, securing the possibility of serving the region in the off-season when there is a shortage of the product.

The goal is to diversify the company’s portfolio and increase its relationship network. “This operation strengthens our position as a nationally active player, with the capacity to serve customers in all regions of the country,” says Paulo Trucco, FS’s commercial director of Ethanol and Energy. The use of rail, which has a lower environmental impact, is also consistent with FS’s goal of becoming the world’s largest producer of negative carbon fuel.

This was the first corn ethanol transport operation carried out by VLI towards the Port of Itaqui. The company is a reference in the transport of fuels by rail in the Central-North corridor, responsible for a large part of the supply to the Tocantins market. It now adds another product to its portfolio.

“The operation is multimodal in nature, with fuel being transported by road from Sorriso to Porto Nacional, from which train cars bring the product to the Port of Itaqui. In general, corn ethanol is consumed in the Southeast and South regions, but we worked with our customer [FS] to make its transport viable through the Central-North corridor in a safe, agile, and efficient manner,” says Joao Carlos Souza, Commercial Manager of Fuels at VLI.
