The Amazon region will be the first in Brazil to have a port with the Vanzolini Foundation’s AQUA sustainability certification. The certificate will be presented to the Port of Manaus during the Norte Export event, the leading trade show in waterway logistics held in northern Brazil.

To gain the certification, the Super Terminais in Manaus underwent a rigorous audit, in which it demonstrated commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and ESG principles. Out of the fifteen categories assessed by Vanzolini Foundation, Super Terminais scored the highest in eight.

Super Terminais invested heavily in preserving the Amazon biome to achieve environmental performance and sustainability results, including a rigorous management program that constantly evaluates waste disposal, promotes environmental education and vector control, cleans water reservoirs, monitors noise, and mitigates health hazards.

To avoid possible environmental disasters, Super Terminais has containment plans for accidents, such as potential oil spills from ships. To this end, the port formed its own brigade and established contracts with specialized companies trained to effectively and quickly prevent or contain any leaks in the event of accidents.

Another critical factor in reducing environmental damage is that Super Terminais does not offer hull or deck cleaning services or the option of disposing of waste on-site. This measure avoids possible impacts on the quality of the river’s water, which is vital for preserving the environment.

Controlling polluting gas emissions is also critical for port managers. One of the actions taken was to re-organize truck reception so that carriers do not wait in queues and emit gases while waiting to load or unload cargo.

The depth of the Rio Negro river, where the port is located, is 35 meters in the dry season and 50 meters in the flood season. According to AQUA, this natural feature promotes sustainability by avoiding the need for a soil dredging process to contain the draft level, something that has a significant impact on other ports.

With more than 25 years of experience in the transport and logistics market, Super Terminais operates containerized, project, and loose cargo.
