Brazil: tobacco exports exceed US$2.72 billion in 2023

Since 1993, Brazil has consistently held its position as the world’s leading exporter of tobacco. Recent data from the Ministry of Development, Industry, and Trade (MDIC/ComexStat) reveals that despite a slight decrease in volume compared to 2022, there has been a notable increase in revenue. Brazil shipped a total of 512,064 tonnes, marking a 12.45% decrease from 2022 when it reached 584,861 tonnes. However, in terms of dollars, exports amounted to an impressive US$ 2.729 billion, reflecting an 11.32% increase from the previous year’s US$ 2.452 billion.

Iro Schünke, President of the Interstate Tobacco Industry Union (SindiTabaco), notes that this outcome aligns with expectations. “Our 2023 survey predicted a decrease in shipment volume but an increase in the total dollar amount exported, and this has indeed materialized,” remarks Schünke.

Noteworthy is the fact that 107 countries participated in purchasing the product, with the European Union taking the lead at 42% of the total shipped. The Far East followed at 31%, Africa/Middle East at 11%, North America at 8%, and Latin America at 8%. Belgium, China, the United States, and Indonesia retained their positions in the ranking of main importers, with the United Arab Emirates, Vietnam, and Turkey making appearances among the largest importers in 2023.

Tobacco production in Brazil remains concentrated in the South Region, contributing to 95% of the nation’s output. In 2023, 85% of the volume shipped originated from the Port of Rio Grande (RS), 12.1% from Santa Catarina, and 2.9% from Paraná. The overall contribution of tobacco to Brazil’s export portfolio stood at 0.80%, reaching 4.51% in the South Region and an impressive 11.19% in Rio Grande do Sul, the largest producing state.

Schünke emphasizes, “These numbers underscore the enduring significance of tobacco in the southern Brazilian agricultural landscape, particularly for the people of Rio Grande do Sul.”
