Fortescue and Pecém celebrate H2V pre-contract

Week 202223

Negotiations between Australia’s Fortescue – which signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Ceará to implement a green hydrogen production unit in Pecém – and CIPP S/A, which manages the Pecém Industrial Port Complex and ZPE free trade zone, were concluded.

The two parties have agreed on the terms of a pre-contract that will be signed next week.

According to the Secretary of Economic Development of the government of Ceará, Maia Júnior, the contract will lay out duties and responsibilities for CIPP and Fortescue.

The former will guarantee that the entire port structure will be available for handling the Australian company’s cargo. The latter will, in return, build an H2V production unit that will reuse water supplied by the government of Ceará or build a desalination plant to use marine water.

According to Secretary Maia Júnior, the deal between CIPP and Fortescue should cause a domino effect. That is, other international companies that have already signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the state government will speed up their pre-contract negotiations with Pecém.

Fortescue’s pre-contract with CIPP S/A is being drafted in English and Portuguese. The text should be available for signing next week, on a date to be announced.

Fortescue’s production unit in the ZPE Ceará free trade zone will occupy 190 hectares, very close to the port. If other companies want a similar deal, they will have to shorten their understanding with CIPP and sign pre-contracts;
