Cargo throughput at the Port of Santos in the first five months of the year was in line with the good performance of Brazilian agribusiness, thus reaching a new record high: 66.5 million tonnes, up 5.5% year-on-year.

Exports grew 5.7%, totaling 48.3 million tonnes, and imports advanced 4.9%, reaching 18.3 million tonnes.

The performance was driven upwards by corn shipments, with a growth of 134% to 1.5 million tonnes, followed by shipments of products from the soy complex (beans and bran) with 21.8 million tonnes, up 10% year on year. Pulp once again stood out and recorded a growth of 63.6%, totaling 3.3 million tonnes.

“The effectiveness of shipments of agribusiness cargo reflects Santos’ recent investments, particularly specialized terminals able to handle larger volumes more efficiently and productively. Furthermore, the port is planning to extend and modernize the structures used for fertilizer and container operations by auctioning off new dedicated terminals [STS 53 and STS 10],” said Fernando Biral, CEO of the Santos Port Authority.

Also noteworthy were meat shipments, which increased by 49.3% (to 986,200 tonnes), and diesel, which increased by 35.7% to 982,500 tonnes. As for imports, fertilizer landings grew by 24.2%, totaling 3.4 million tonnes.

Container throughput exceeded 2.0 million TEU, 0.4% higher than in the first five months of 2021 – the best mark in the port’s history for January-May.

The cumulative number of solid bulk reached 34.1 million tonnes, up 6.6% over the same period in 2021. The volume of liquid bulk also showed growth and totaled 7.6 million tonnes, up 5.4 %. Both recorded their best marks for the period.

The flow of vessels totaled 2,093, 3.0% above the same period last year.

May – Cargo throughput in May was 14.1 million tonnes, up 0.2% over the fifth month of 2021, marking itself as the best mark for that month. Discharges grew by 1.4% (to 3.6 million tonnes), while shipments dropped by 0.3% to 10.5 million tonnes.

Trade Balance – The share of the Port of Santos in the Brazilian trade flow was 29.4% in May. Around 32.6% of all commercial transactions involving the Port of Santos in 2022 also involved China. São Paulo remains the state with the highest participation in foreign trade transactions through the Port of Santos (51.7%).
