In 2021, pork exports from Brazil surpassed 1 million tons, the biggest result in the country’s pork history.

According to Giovani Ferreira, content director at Canal Rural, the volume of shipments increased by 80% in the last five years, “which shows that Brazil has gained space in the international protein market and that the country has become an important player. The challenge now is keeping up the pace,” adds him.

See below the track record of Brazilian pork exports in the last five years. Data are from DataLiner:

As for poultry, Brazil is the second-largest producer of chicken meat and has been able to keep its position as the world’s leading exporter while setting another record. “When it comes to chicken, Brazil is unbeatable. The world needs Brazil in order to eat chicken protein, says Ferreira. In 2021, the country exported 4.24 million tons of the item abroad.

As opposed to pork exports from Brazil, the beef industry was able to ship 1.55 million tons in 2021 despite having its performance impaired by China’s ban on the product, which lingered for more than 100 days. “China accounted for more than 50% of beef exported from Brazil. The three-month-long embargo damaged the country’s economy. Our performance was kept below 2019 levels, a year in which 1.56 million tons were shipped abroad. China lifted the ban in December when there was no time left to make it up for the delays”, explains Ferreira.

 Soybeans and maize

Soybean exports were, once again, the shining star of 2021. Brazilian oilseed exports increased by 67 percent in the last five years, reaching an all-time high of 86.1 million tons in 2021.

“In the last five years, we have competed with the United States, but now Brazil is consolidating itself as the world’s largest producer and exporter of soybeans. Another factor to be highlighted is the expressive foreign exchange revenue earned. Soybeans alone generated earnings of US$ 38.6 billion in foreign exchange profits,” he adds.

In 2021, Brazil exported 20.4 million corn. “The product had a very expressive final sprint at the end of the year. Of the 20 million tons, almost 15 million were shipped in the last four months of the year”.

Corn’s final result, which was lower than in previous years, was due to a shortage of the cereal on the domestic market, which was caused by a deficit in the previous harvest.

However, maize imports reached a record level of 3.2 million tons. “We rationalized exports, and even so we had to buy corn to supply the domestic market.”

Major topics

As far as Giovani Ferreira is concerned, China will demand our attention in 2022. “How will beef exports behave? In the case of pork, China has already announced that it will buy less, so we need to pay close attention to the two proteins”.

Corn will also be a hot topic in 2022. “Brazil is experiencing another severe drought in the south; perhaps we are experiencing the same situation as last year.”
