Two mining companies have submitted proposals to the federal government to build and operate their own railways in an effort to facilitate the distribution of their products throughout the country. They resorted to the federal Pro Trilhos program, which encourages the expansion of the national railway network based on the authorization regime. The modality is provided for in the Legal Framework of Railroads, which, since its launch, has already totaled 21 requests for new projects representing R$ 83.7 billion in investments and 5,640.5 kilometers of new tracks.

One of the most recent requests filed with the Ministry of Infrastructure (MINFRA) is from Morro do Pilar Minerais, S.A. The company presented a proposal for a new, R$1 billion 100-kilometer railway between the municipalities of Colatina and Linhares (ES) ). The segment will be aimed at transporting 25 million tons per year of iron ore cargo (solid bulk).

Brazil Iron Mineração Ltda. intends to build and operate a railway and a railway terminal – a project to be developed in three stages with an investment of R$ 1.2 billion for a total railway extension of 120 kilometers. Initially, the company intends to run a 70-kilometer segment between the municipality of Abaíra (BA) and the location of the railway terminal it intends to structure, Brumado (BA). The section would connect the Mocó mine, in Piatã (BA), and other “mining rights” that the company holds in the state, to the junction with the West-East Integration Railway (FIOL) near Brumado.

The second stage includes loading in the mine region and access to the ore storage areas and their loading stations along an estimated distance of 50 kilometers. Finally, Brazil Iron’s project includes ongoing technical studies for the company to expand the tracks and connect its mines to the Centro-Atlântica Railroad (FCA).

All 21 requests submitted so far to the federal government are still being analyzed by the SNTT (the national land transport secretariat) team and 14 are already being evaluated by ANTT (the national land transport agency) regarding locational feasibility.
