On December 13th, Voltalia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Pernambuco and the Suape Industrial Port Complex to collaborate on a green hydrogen production project and its derivatives, such as green ammonia and e-methanol, in areas near the port.

With 1.4 GW of installed capacity in solar and wind plants in Brazil and 7 GW of projects in development, mainly in the Northeast, Voltalia is a key player in the renewable energy sector.

The focus of the project will be on both domestic market consumption opportunities and meeting the demand of international off-takers.

Voltalia is one of the founding members of the Brazilian Association of Green Hydrogen Industry (ABIHV), bringing together companies from the energy, technology, and agribusiness sectors interested in developing the hydrogen market in the country.

“The fact that energy consumption represents over 60% of the production costs of green hydrogen positions Voltalia, one of the main players in renewable energy generation, in a strategic position as a strong competitor in the emerging Brazilian green hydrogen market. Our company sees green hydrogen as a strategic vector to accelerate the energy transition,” said Robert Klein, CEO of Voltalia.

Suape Hub

Marcio Guiot, CEO of the Port of Suape, explains that the complex aims to position itself as a hub for the production and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives, “looking not only at our green hydrogen export project but mainly at developing the industries in the complex and Pernambuco.”

The port, near the capital Recife, is at the heart of the state’s strategy to attract investments with the stamp of the energy transition.

In pursuing new industrial chains, Pernambuco is banking on the demand for synthetic fuels on European routes passing through the port, local biomass production for ethanol, and an increase in natural gas supply.

However, the first project faced a setback: a dispute over an area in the port led to arbitration between Suape and Vard Promar, which questioned the hiring of Qair to build a green (electrolysis) and blue (natural gas with carbon capture) hydrogen plant.
