The port complex of Vila Velha has been chosen by China Ocean Shipping Company (Cosco) as the destination for the maiden voyage of its first ship from its new “green fleet.” This vessel, named “Green Kimi,” belongs to Cosco’s new generation of ships and is set to serve a direct and regular maritime cargo line connecting China and Brazil without transshipment.

After a baptism ceremony, the “Green Kimi,” measuring 225m in length, 33m in width, and capable of carrying 68,000 tonnes of cargo, will set sail on its maiden voyage on Tuesday (18th). Departing from the Port of Taicang in East China’s Jiangsu province, it will sail towards the Vila Velha Terminal (TVV), transporting three thousand new vehicles.

Scheduled to dock in Vila Velha on September 5th, the “Green Kimi” is hailed as the most modern, fuel-efficient, and lowest carbon emission vessel in Cosco’s fleet. This state-of-the-art ship is also one of the most advanced globally, with minimal fuel consumption and low carbon dioxide emissions. It will unload cutting-edge vehicles manufactured by Chinese automakers GWM and BYD, catering to the Brazilian market.

According to Vila Velha’s Mayor, Arnaldinho Borgo, more than eight thousand vehicles have entered the Brazilian market coming from China through the port of Vila Velha in the first half of this year. The port is served by a robust intermodal transportation network, making it a crucial hub for trade.

Carlos Eiras, President of the Brazil-China Chamber of Commerce, revealed that Cosco aims to bring around 15,000 Chinese vehicles, primarily from the GWM and BYD brands, to the Vila Velha port complex by the end of this year. From there, these vehicles will be distributed to importers across Brazil. Vila Velha’s strategic location in the Southeast Region, within a thousand kilometers radius of major consumer markets such as São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Brasília, and Salvador, makes it an ideal gateway for Latin America’s largest consumer markets.

TVV

Operated by Log-In Logística Intermodal, the Vila Velha Terminal (TVV) has recorded significant growth, with a 45.3% increase in the 2022/23 period. The company’s refined pricing strategy and diverse cargo mix have contributed to its competitiveness. Notably, TVV achieved a historic record of R$ 48.2 million in Net Operating Revenue for storing goods and other services during the first quarter of this year alone. These achievements highlight the port operations in Vila Velha as a reference throughout Brazil.
