The National Ports Administration (ANP) of Uruguay reported that the Port of Montevideo experienced a 33% growth in cargo throughput, measured in TEUs, during January 2024 compared to the same month in 2023.

According to information from the state-owned company, the port located in the Uruguayan capital handled 108,938 TEUs in the first month of the year.

This milestone was achieved after handling 1,120,000 TEUs in 2023’s year-to-date, ensuring, for the third consecutive year, historical cargo throughput figures at the Port of Montevideo.

The year 2024 is off to a favorable start not only in port operations. Recently, Uruguay obtained approval from Argentina to dredge the access channel to the Port of Montevideo, allowing deepening to 14 meters and thereby improving logistical, economic, and commercial conditions.

Additionally, in the third week of January, drilling and rock removal began on the seabed of the port area due to the expansion works of the Container Terminal (TCP) by Kateon Natie and ANP.

The TCP expansion is expected to be completed by May 2025, with the construction of a 365-meter dock, providing a container area of seven hectares. The second stage will be ready a year later.

The upward trend in TEU handling at the Port of Montevideo is expected to be sustained over time, reaching new milestones after the completion of the works in the area.

It’s worth noting that the port surpassed the one million TEUs mark for the first time in 2022.

Export of Goods

In January, requests for the export of goods increased by 12% compared to the same month in 2023. This marks the fourth consecutive month of growth, as confirmed by María Laura Rodríguez, in charge of Economic, Communication, and Environmental Advisory at the Union of Exporters of Uruguay.
