US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on June 1st that approximately 85 grain-laden ships are stuck in the Ukrainian city of Odesa, on the shores of the Black Sea, because of the Russian blockade. According to him, about 25 million tonnes of grains are stored in silos near the region.

Although the blockade continues, negotiations to release Ukrainian grain exports advanced on Wednesday as a high-ranking Russian official accepted Turkey’s conditions for demining the Black Sea. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has been leading discussions trying to open a corridor for grain and sunflower oil shipments out of Ukrainian ports – and get Russian grains and fertilizers to world markets.

If the negotiations are successful, Turkey will act on mine clearance and ensure that Russian naval vessels allow safe passage of freighters out of Ukraine. Guterres is also pressing Washington to make efforts to prevent US sanctions from targeting Russian grain and fertilizers.

Turkish warships will protect one route as part of negotiations with Russia to secure a safe maritime corridor for supplies of food products from Ukraine, officials said.

According to the Kremlin report, Russian President Vladimir Putin claims he will be able to export “significant volumes” of grain in exchange for an end to Western-imposed sanctions. On the other hand, US officials have pointed out that food and fertilizer are not part of US embargoes on the Russian economy.
