Terminal Cuenca del Plata (TCP) has commenced the expansion works of the Port of Montevideo, involving an investment of $600 million.

In the first phase, as detailed by TCP, dredging procedures have begun in the area where the new dock will be built, while in the second stage, the cleared area will be filled.

Fernando Correa, the Manager of Institutional Relations at Terminal Cuenca del Plata, stated that the work will be completed within a two-year timeframe.

“The first step is the removal of mud and rock in the aquatic area, followed by the filling process, then the infrastructure, the dock, the waterfront, and finally, the installation of the equipment we will operate with,” Correa affirmed.

“We hope that in approximately two years, it will be ready, and we will be operational,” he added.

According to the executive, the extension will not interfere with the operation of the current terminal.

Juan Curbelo, the President of the National Ports Administration (ANP) of Uruguay, commented that the expansion will turn Montevideo into a regional hub.

“In 2022, we surpassed the historic milestone of one million TEUs,” he added. “In this year 2023, despite the decrease in exports, the port’s numbers continue to rise, and this is due – we must underline – to an aggressive port policy, the excellent services provided by the Port of Montevideo, and the fact that 60% of all containerized cargo transits through and is transshipped at the Port of Montevideo,” he said.

In this regard, Curbelo highlighted measures to attract new maritime services to the Port of Montevideo, such as the LUX service, which arrived in Uruguay for the first time with a call at TCP.

“The LUX service started a weekly operation, based on an agreement between Cosco, OOCL, and ONE, connecting northern Europe and the Mediterranean with the east coast of South America. This achieves better connectivity,” he stated.
