Suape prepares public call for green hydrogen plant with 1GW capacity

The Port of Suape plans to launch a public call within 15 days to attract companies interested in building a green hydrogen (H2V) plant to start production in 2026. The cost of installing a unit with a 1 GW electrolysis capacity is estimated to be around US$ 3.5 billion.

According to Carlos Cavalcanti, Suape’s director of Environment and Sustainability, the port will make two additional calls for projects such as this in the second half of the year.

Currently, the port administration is talking to three interested parties: Qair, of French origin; the Brazilian Casa dos Ventos; and Australia’s Fortescue Future Industries (FFI), a subsidiary of mining company Fortescue Metals Group.

The three companies have already signed memoranda of understanding with the Port of Suape. The expectation is that other agents participate in the public call.

“Suape is today a large condominium. We house 224 companies within the complex and we still have a lot of potential to grow”, says Cavalcanti.

The plant’s model won a competition in which 31 projects participated. According to Cavalcanti, it will use blockchain technology, which allows tracking and verifying the origin of the H2V.

“This plant is outside the port’s polygonal area. Its administration will be carried out directly by Suape without interference from the National Secretariat of Ports. This is an important attraction factor”, explains Cavalcanti.

Autonomy and upcoming green hydrogen projects

The Port of Suape (PE) administration expects to regain control of the port complex’s management autonomy in 60 days, reducing bureaucracy and speeding up bidding processes.

The port is awaiting a response from the federal government on the matter as it looks to attract investors to expand its gas infrastructure — and, in the long run, to establish itself as one of the country’s top H2V hubs.
