Companies interested in building a green hydrogen (H2V) production plant at the Suape Port Industrial Complex have until September 27 to submit proposals. The estimated investment is around US$ 3.5 billion, with a capacity of 1 GW (gigawatt) and an area of 72.5963 hectares.

The lease contract will have a term of 25 years, with a possible extension for an equal period. The call will be published in Pernambuco State’s Official Gazette. The area is located outside the polygon area of the port and is directly managed by the state-owned maritime authority.

In the future plant, H2V, known as the fuel of the future, will be produced from the desalination of seawater. The public announcement also includes calls for constructing two blue hydrogen plants that will operate from the breakdown of methane steam, which will be used as an input for ammonia production in two other units to be implemented in Suape.

Green hydrogen is obtained from electrolysis plants, which separate oxygen and hydrogen from water, and has tremendous potential for generating electricity without emitting carbon dioxide. It’s dubbed green because the factories that produce it run exclusively on renewable energy.

H2V is an input for numerous companies, primarily on the European continent, and it is already used as a car fuel. It is also used to make ammonia, one of the most important fertilizers for farming, of which Brazil is a significant producer.

Large corporations have already expressed interest in the area, and some Memorandums of Understanding have been inked with the state-owned organization. “Suape is a massive complex that includes various excellent business opportunities. There are currently 224 firms in the industrial zone, creating over 40,000 jobs and income for the community.”

“The inauguration of a facility of this magnitude reinforces our commitment to sustainability while also demonstrating that the port has the potential to become one of the most important berths on the continent and in the world,” says Suape CEO Roberto Gusmão.
