South Korea Allows Imports of Brazilian Shrimp-based Products

The Brazilian government has welcomed with satisfaction South Korea’s decision to allow the export of ten shrimp-based products from Brazil to their market, eliminating the need for an International Health Certificate (IHC).
These products include various forms of non-quarantined shrimp, such as headless, peeled, eviscerated, or whole, with or without tails, cooked or raw, all available in frozen or chilled varieties. The assortment encompasses Ebi shrimp (for sushi), head-on and shell-on shrimp, Torpedo shrimp (breaded), seasoned shrimp, and a mixture of shrimp with fish pieces.
To facilitate exports, Brazilian establishments must register with the South Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, a process that can be initiated by either the South Korean importer or the Brazilian exporter.
This marks the second market that South Korea has opened to Brazilian products in less than a month. In early April, the country permitted the export of animal by-products (meals and fats from poultry) from Brazil for animal feed.
In 2023, South Korea ranked as the eighth largest destination for Brazilian agricultural products, with exports totaling US$3.37 billion. Sales to the South Korean market in the first three months of this year alone reached US$646 million.
This recent opening is significant, marking the 106th commercial expansion for Brazilian agribusiness in 50 countries since the beginning of last year. It underscores the collaborative efforts between the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE).
