The Saudi health surveillance agency, Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA), withdrew a requirement for beef imported from Brazil. Before, the rule limited the age of the animals whose meat would be destined for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to 30 months.

The information was disclosed in the new approved model of the International Health Certificate (CSI). The text also includes the possibility of exporting Brazilian sheep meat to the Arab country.

The removal of the requirement regarding the age of slaughtered animals was celebrated by exporters. “This was very well received by the sector as it opens up export options,” said Marcel Moreira Pinto, agricultural attaché of Brazil in Riyadh.

The opening of the market to sheep is still being evaluated. “The Saudis import sheep meat mainly from Australia. As there was never any commercial flow with Brazil, we still don’t know what the demand and interest in the Brazilian product will be”, explained the attaché.

To start the export process, Moreira Pinto recalls that it will be necessary to certify export establishments with the Saudi health authority. The executive is also investigating with the Saudi authorities whether the opening of the market also extends to goats.

Sheep in Brazil

In March 2020, Brazil also opened a sheepmeat market in Kuwait. However, as ANBA found out, the volume produced by Brazil is still small compared to Arab demand. The Brazilian consumption itself needs to be complemented by importing sheep meat from countries like Uruguay.

The goat sector is still looking to organize itself better to be able to meet demands for the product. Earlier this year, Brazilian breeders even received contact from Egyptians who wanted to buy live animals, but the negotiation came up against the size of the Brazilian herd.
