São Francisco do Sul Port has taken the lead in cargo throughput in Santa Catarina state, handling 12.4 million tonnes, surpassing the privately owned ports of Portonave (11.5 million) and Itapoá (8.3 million).

These figures were released by the National Waterway Transportation Agency (Antaq) in early November and cover the first nine months of the year.

São Francisco also tops the list for the highest growth in cargo throughput among Santa Catarina’s ports, with a 26% increase compared to the same period in 2022, up from 9.8 million tonnes. Following closely are Portonave (+21.6%) and Itapoá (+13.3%).

The historic record for the port on the state’s north coast was driven by the bumper crop of soybeans and corn, with exports of these grains to China reaching 7.5 million tonnes in 2023.

“Since the beginning of this administration, we have been putting our efforts into making our ports state-of-the-art facilities to boost the state’s economic growth. That’s why we’ve made significant investments in São Francisco do Sul Port’s infrastructure. We will continue to invest and drive our economy forward,” highlights Governor Jorginho Mello.

“The investments made throughout the year were crucial for cargo throughput, including opening a new access road for trucks and revitalizing cargo loading and unloading areas,” explains port president Cleverton Vieira.

He adds that in the first three quarters, São Francisco’s cargo accounted for 27% of the total handled by the state’s five ports (46.2 million tonnes).

“We have an effective and modern infrastructure that allows us to handle large volumes of cargo throughput safely and efficiently,” says Vieira.

“We are very pleased to see São Francisco do Sul’s performance, which greatly contributes to the results of the sector in Santa Catarina, even in a year of difficulties caused by significant weather-related incidents that affected us,” says Beto Martins, the State Secretary of Ports, Airports, and Railways.

Southern Region of Brazil

In the past five years, São Francisco do Sul Port has increased its share of cargo throughput in the Southern Region of Brazil by 30%, according to information from the National Waterway Transportation Agency (Antaq).

The 12.4 million tonnes processed by the port in Santa Catarina represent 9.2% of the total handled this year by port terminals in Santa Catarina, Paraná, and Rio Grande do Sul (135 million tonnes). In 2019, São Francisco’s share in the Southern Region was 7.1%.
