The feasibility of allocating certain zones for housing parking lots and improving the infrastructure for truck drivers accessing the Port of Santos was discussed on July 5th by Rogério Santos, the mayor of Santos; the State Secretary of Logistics and Transport, Clodoaldo Pacce; representatives of Sindicam, the autonomous truckers union acting in the region; the São Paulo State Transport Agency (Artesp); São Paulo’s Department of Highways, and Ecovias.

The Port of Santos is accessed daily by around 10,000 trucks. Truck drivers have two thousand parking spaces, most of them in Cubatão.

Mayor Rogério Santos pointed out that this high flow of heavy vehicles, mainly visible at the entrance to the City, tends to increase due to the auction of the STS10 terminal destined for containers (promoted by the Federal Government).

Studies indicate that the movement of in-road cargo should increase by 20%. “The Federation should only do the bidding after a complete restructuring of the road infrastructure in the entire access area to the future terminal, which involves, for example, the construction of a viaduct in Alemoa.”

The State Secretary of Logistics and Transport of São Paulo, Clodoaldo Pacce, committed to promoting talks and negotiations brokered by Santos. “The problem is far from simple, but we will fight for the City and the category; Ecovias has started a dialogue with the Union. We are going to open doors, to seek solutions.”

The situation of truck drivers was reported by Sindicam’s operational director, Romero Costa, who spoke about the lack of adequate infrastructure for parking while waiting to load and unload. “Inside the largest port in Latin America, we don’t have a place for truck drivers to park. We don’t have a bathroom or access place. We don’t have the infrastructure, and we need a solution.”
