Santos Brasil has entered into a partnership with CMA CGM and Cosco to join the New Brazex long-haul service (connecting the Gulf of Mexico, Latin America, and the Caribbean) at Tecon Imbituba, a container terminal operated by the company at the port of Imbituba, in Santa Catarina. The inaugural call took place last week with the vessel Hans Schulte.

The terminal, which already offered a cabotage service with weekly calls, will now also regularly handle import and export cargoes. The forecast is for the new service to make 52 calls per year in Imbituba, handling approximately 80,000 TEUs. With this new milestone, Imbituba becomes an important logistical alternative for the region’s foreign trade.

To accommodate long-haul lines, Santos Brasil has been adjusting procedures and processes to meet the specificities of this type of operation and is investing around R$ 26 million in systems, equipment, and new service contracts.

The Imbituba terminal will operate with two ZPMC quay cranes, 11 reach stackers, and 20 trucks for internal services. All gates will now feature OCR (optical character recognition), allowing for greater efficiency and agility in container reception and dispersal; and more than 20 data collectors have been purchased to provide greater accuracy in container yard positioning. All systems are being fine-tuned to ensure seamless integration of the terminal with the relevant authorities, and customer service channels have also been reinforced to increase interaction with various company interfaces.

According to Ricardo Buteri, Commercial Director of Santos Brasil, securing a regular long-haul service enables the company to expand its investments in the port of Imbituba, promoting continuous and sustainable growth of the terminal. “Regular lines bring predictability and stability to operations and enable the provision of reliable, efficient, and highly productive service,” he says.
