Russia has decided to resume purchases of Brazilian beef after suspending imports from Mato Grosso slaughterhouses. The country announced the decision on Monday, Sept. 28. The ruling had been in place since September 2021, according to the Mato Grosso  Animal Breeders Association (Acrimat).

The imposition of restrictions took place about a year ago due to the identification of rare cases of “mad cow” disease. At the time, Russia suspended beef imports from Mato Grosso from animals over 30 months of age.

According to the technical director of Acrimat, the veterinarian Francisco Manzi, the decision to resume imports – no matter the time Russia took to make it official – attests to what he had already called for a year ago: that there is no risk of contamination of the disease and that Mato Grosso is a state that values the sanitary conditions of the animals.

“We got two cases of atypical mad cow in September last year. China and Russia have both banned meat imports. After a hundred days, China restarted purchasing, while Russia maintained its embargo, accepting only animals up to 30 months old. Now, the country returns to the market buying all kinds of products, including live animals and offal,” he explained.

Russia’s decision was informed by the Federal Health and Phytosanitary Surveillance Service (Rosselkhoznadzor) of the Russian Ministry of Agriculture.
