Week 202126

On June 21st, the Superintendence of the Ports of Rio Grande do Sul (Portos RS) released the performance of the first five months of 2021 for the three public ports of the state under its administration (Porto Alegre, Pelotas, and Rio Grande) and the performance of the private handling at the Rio Grande Superport complex. Between January and May, the complexes handled 17,377,208 tons, an increase of 6.27% over the same period last year and 11.13% over the first five months of 2019.

The Rio Grande Superport port complex – made up of the public port, the five leased private terminals, the two shipyards, and the four terminals for private use by companies – accounted for most of this amount: 16,365,273 tons in the January period to May, an increase of 5.43% compared to the same period of 2020.

The good news was the handling during May, the best month in the history of the Superport complex, when the port moved a total of 4,545,663 tons. The amount surpassed the record set during the previous month when 4.47 million tons were handled.

Concerning handling at the Superport, the highest percentage increase in loads was due to wood load handling, which increased by 257.86%, followed by corn (43.23%), soy meal (21.01 %), and pulp (11.96%). Container handling in May alone increased by 25.09% and by 12.05% in the accumulated period. The sum of all exports from the complex represents an increase of 6.72%, compared to the same period in 2020.

Porto de Pelotas breaks the second record of the year

For the second time in 2021, the Port of Pelotas recorded significant increases in handling. Because of this, May can be considered the best month ever in terms of the amount of cargo transported. The two main goods in the port of Pelotas – wood logs and clinker – increased their loads compared to last year and the year before. In May alone, there were 147,775 tons handled, an increase of 73.88% compared to the same period in 2019 and an 18.79% increase compared to the same month in 2020. In the accumulated five months, the increase from 2020 to 2021 was 27.66%.

The Port of Porto Alegre was responsible for handling 307,752 tons of fertilizers, which together with barley, wheat, salt, and others, respectively, reached 426,005 tons. Compared to last year, the total cargo handled at the Porto Alegre pier registered an increase of 14.89%. The biggest movement highlight continues to be fertilizers, which increased 42.37% compared to the same period last year.
