Port authority Portos do Paraná concluded September with 5,894,571 tonnes of cargo handled. This volume marks the best September in history, surpassing the previous record set in 2020 (5,261,752 tonnes) by 12%. It also represents a 23% increase compared to the same month last year (4,779,559 tonnes).

In the first nine months of this year, nearly 48 million tonnes (47,997,984) passed through Paranaguá and Antonina, a 7.53% increase compared to the same period last year (44,636,073).

Gabriel Vieira, Director of Port Operations, explains that strong market demand and confidence in the port infrastructure in Paraná have been driving these favorable results. “September was a month of exceptional production and efficiency at the port. Despite almost ten days of rain during the month, we handled nearly 6 million tonnes,” he said.

He emphasizes that, in addition to being the best September in history, the first nine months of the year are also significant. “This represents an increase of 3.3 million tonnes compared to the same period last year, which was the best year in our history,” he noted.

PRODUCTS – In September, solid bulk exports stood out with 2.7 million tonnes, with a resurgence in fertilizer imports, up 80% from last year. Soybeans (1,276,724 tonnes), with a 178% increase compared to September 2022, bulk sugar (668,756 tons), and petroleum derivatives (89,592 tons) also had meaningful results.

Soybeans have performed exceptionally well this year, with 11,449,461 tonnes moved from January to September, a 33% increase compared to the previous year (8,611,972). Another standout product was soybean meal, with a 12% growth (from 4,347,550 to 4,861,381 tonnes). “It’s a flat cargo but had significant productivity this year,” explained Gabriel Vieira.

Bulk sugar saw a 29% growth from January to September compared to the previous year (from 2,738,927 to 3,532,977 tonnes), a similar trend to the vehicle trade (from 54,516 units in 2022 to 66,629 in 2023), and wheat, which jumped from 32,895 tonnes to 45,644 tonnes.

GOALS – The Director of Port Operations highlights that the goals are being met despite the rains, which temporarily impeded a significant portion of shipments and arrivals in Paranaguá and Antonina. “We expect to reach 60 million tonnes this year and may even surpass that goal. It’s a reflection of market demand but also our ability to meet it. There’s a lot of efficiency in equipment, planning, execution, and control, both by the Port Authority and the engagement of terminals, operators, agencies, and pilotage,” he stated.
