The Public Truck Holding Yard at the Port of Paranagua saw a record number of trucks in a 24-hour period. From 7:00 am on Tuesday (04) to 7:00 am on Wednesday (05), a total of 2,456 vehicles entered the yard to await the unloading of solid bulk cargo destined to become exports. Despite the high influx, the reception proceeded in an organized manner, without any queues.

Of the 2,456 trucks that entered the holding area within that 24-hour timeframe, 57.6% were loaded with soy. Among them, 1,414 vehicles brought grains to the Port of Paranaguá. Additionally, 548 trucks carried corn, while another 494 vehicles carried soymeal.

The chart below displays the volume of corn exports from the Port of Paranagua between Jan 2019 and May 2023. The data is from DataLiner.

“This is the largest number of trucks ever seen at the staging ground in a single day,” states Luiz Fernando Garcia, the director-president of Portos do Paraná. He also called attention to the time the trucks stayed in the yard.

“The terminals have performed exceptionally well in unloading cargo off these trucks. In July, truck drivers spent an average of six hours and forty-three minutes at the yard,” adds Garcia.

The holding area has a static capacity to accommodate approximately a thousand trucks. On-site, all grains and meals destined for the export terminals are categorized and go through quality checks by the company contracted by the Association of Terminals of the East Corridor of the Port of Paranaguá (Atexp).

Gabriel Vieira, the director of operations at Portos do Paraná, explains that the logistics for receiving cargo upon arrival in the city prioritize organization and control.

“We have implemented scheduling windows for trucks, managing the flow of vehicles through daily quotas at the terminals. This is done through a management system called ‘Carga On-Line,” he says.

Vieira further explained that Portos do Paraná continuously monitors the performance of each terminal. This quality control is carried out using a meter that evaluates the unloading efficiency of each terminal, enabling the regulation of truck registrations for each unloading section.

“We manage the number of vehicles on the access road to the terminals. The algorithms developed by the Carga On-Line system analyze and control the flow of trucks from their origin to the unloading destination,” explains the director.
