Brazilian exports of chicken meat are expected to total 4.7 million tonnes in 2022, an increase of 11% from the 2021 record of 4.225 million tonnes, the representative of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in Brasilia said in a report.

The forecast for 2023 is a 6% growth to 5 million tons.

USDA projections do not include chicken’s feet.

According to the USDA, the African swine fever outbreak in China in 2018, recent outbreaks of avian influenza in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and North America, and the conflict in Ukraine have resulted in shortages of animal protein in several markets.

As Brazil was not directly affected by these crises, the scenario presented as one of increased demand and opportunities for Brazilian meats abroad, the USDA office said, adding that the favorable exchange rate increased Brazil’s advantage in commodity exports.

As for production, the USDA forecasts a reduction of 1% in 2022 to 14.4 million tonnes. For 2023, the forecast is for an increase of 3% to 14.85 million tonnes.

According to the USDA, domestic consumption will fall by 6% to 9.7 million tonnes in 2022. According to the attaché, this drop should represent weaker domestic supply, higher costs, lower consumer purchasing power due to inflation, and increasing egg consumption. Consumption is predicted to rise by 2% to 9.85 million tonnes in 2023.
