Portos RS registers cargo volume growth across all state ports

The ports of Rio Grande, Pelotas, and Porto Alegre concluded the period from January to July 2023 with a notable surge on solid bulk movement. Statistics for the initial seven months of the year were unveiled by the Portos RS Statistics division. When compared to the corresponding period in the previous year, there was an upswing of 6.95%.

In tandem, the public ports of Brazil’s southernmost state recorded a cargo throughput a total of 23,732,837 tonnes. In this total, solid bulk comprised 14,738,074 tonnes, while general cargo amounted to 6,773,864 tonnes, and liquid bulk reached a total of 2,220,899 tonnes. Additionally, the Portos RS facilities witnessed 2,139 vessels. Among these, 1,753 vessels passed through Rio Grande, 79 vessels berthed in Porto Alegre, and 307 barges were directed to the Pelotas unit.

The movment of soybeans at the Rio Grande Port increased by 67.60% year on year. Following closely behind, urea increased its movement by 32.99%, while soymeal ranked third with an 11.09% increase. The list is completed by rice, which has increased by 10.35%, and phosphate, which has increased by 10.16%.

When it comes to import origins, Argentina maintains its lead with 604,538 tonnes, China is second with 584,529 tonnes, and Canada is third with 387,192 tonnes. When it comes to export destinations, China leads with 3,796,016 tonnes, followed by Indonesia (767,648 tonnes) and Vietnam (735,623 tonnes).

Meanwhile, the Pelotas port unit reported a cargo throughput of 777,212 tonnes from January to July, with wood logs accounting for 645,749 tonnes of that total. These logs are transported by barge along the waterway to the CMPC factory in Guaba, where pulp is processed.

Furthermore, the movement of soy at the Pelotas public wharf reached 6,195 tonnes, while clinker, tallied 125,268 tonnes. The comprehensive movement outcome ranks as the second-highest over the last decade, surpassed only by the record set in 2021, at 843,776 tons.

During the January to July period, the Port of Porto Alegre had a total throughput of 462,260 tons, with 272,791 tons consisting of inputs used in fertilizer production. The second most handled product at the Porto Alegre commercial harbor was barley, with 67,927 tonnes, followed by wheat with 53,003 tonnes and beef tallow with 45,588 tonnes.
