Two days prior to the end of 2021, the state-led company Portos do Paraná set a new annual handling record with 57,345,800 tons of cargo loaded and unloaded at the Paranaguá and Antonina terminals.

In 2020, when the previous record had been achieved, the ports of Paraná closed the year with having handled 57,338,001 tons of imported and exported products.

Figures

The handling of general cargo increased by 10% in the ports of Paraná in 2021, according to the major data available. During the same time period, there was a 4% increase in liquid bulk operations, an 11% increase in the volume of tons handled in containers, and a 9% increase in cellulose operations.

In December 2020, the ports of Paranaguá and Antonina handled 3,777,259 tons of cargo, based on monthly movement. The ports records show 4,267,933 tons handled in 2021 till 7:00 a.m. on December 30th, a 13 percent increase.

December 2021 also came to an end featuring the largest monthly handling rate in the history of the ports, highlights Luiz Fernando Garcia, director-president of Portos do Paraná.

“The words are productivity and efficiency. The performance in 2021 is the result of the commitment demonstrated by Paraná’s port community which has contributed to the achievement of – once again – expressive results and outperforming our own previous record”, he says.

According to Garcia, despite the fact that the current monthly data showed a drop in solid bulk exports due to weather and market constraints, particularly maize and soybeans, the new record was maintained by improvements in other sectors. “Especially general cargo, regardless of whether imports or exports, but also liquid bulk and the unloading of fertilizers, which are solid bulk imports”, adds the executive regarding the data from 2021.

December’s numbers are yet to be consolidated and made available by the Portos do Paraná.
