Week 202140

This Tuesday (19), Portos do Paraná began removing rocks from the shallowest points of Pedra da Palangana. The work will be done with the aid of a mechanical dredger. The removed pieces will be taken to the construction site for crushing. At the end of this process, the stones will be donated to municipalities along the coast of Paraná.

The demolition of Pedra da Palangana aims to provide more safety for navigation and for the environment, with the removal of the shallowest points of the subterranean rock complex. With the removal of only 22,300 cubic meters, about 12% of the stone’s total mass, the risk of ships stranding and causing environmental disasters will be minimized.

Removal – According to the engineering and maintenance directorate of Portos do Paraná, the mechanical dredger equipped with a crane and clamshell bucket will collect the smaller pieces of fragmented rock and deposit them in a barge with a cistern. On land, the rocks will be recycled through crushing.

At this time, activities take place in the innermost and central portions of the navigation channel. Therefore, for 18 hours a day, the passage of large vessels (ships, dredgers, and supply rafts) is not permitted.

Ship maneuvers in the main channel are taking place within a daily window of six hours: between the 4 hours before the high tide, extended to 2 hours after high tide. The flow of ships through the alternative access channel, the Surdinho, is still allowed within the navigation rules.
