Porto Itapoá, located on the North Coast of Santa Catarina, celebrated its 12 years of history last June. The port is among Brazil’s four largest container terminals, with record cargo throughput numbers.

In May, the port broke its own record for cargo handling in a single month for the second time in 2023. It handled 98,113 TEUs – each TEU is equivalent to a 20-foot container. In March, it handled 92,662 TEUs.

The terminal has also been investing constantly in innovation and has a specific department to seek innovative solutions for the company and customers, as explained by Schreiner.

One example is the port successfully reducing by half the use of the lubricating oil in the diesel engines of rubber tire cranes (RTGs – Rubber Tired Gantry Cranes). Such reduction meant saving around 10,000 liters of oil and 120 more filters.

Porto Itapoá invests in growth and expansion

In 2022, Porto Itapoá handled more than 880 thousand TEUs, representing an increase of 14.28% compared to the previous year. In addition, 550 ships passed through the terminal over the last year, according to ANTAQ (National Waterway Transport Agency).

Thanks to that, the terminal is investing in its expansion. Ibama (Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources) authorized the expansion of over 50,000 square meters of the port yard at the end of last year, which now totals 300,000 square meters.

“Over 150,000 square meters of yard are already under construction, which will take us to 450,000 square meters of total area,” Schreiner said. According to him, when completed, the yard will allow the port to move twice as much as the current cargo volume.
