The Port of Suape gained, on Monday, October 31, a new control tower essential for overseeing maritime traffic operations at the Pernambuco-based port. The inauguration ceremony took place on-site with the presence of the state-owned company’s CEO, Roberto Gusmão, and other members of its board and employees.

Then, the new Port Authority Building was opened for operations. The new building will house local chapters of the Federal Police, the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa), the Federal Revenue, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Waterway Transportation Agency (Antaq), Customs Brokers, and Shipping Agents unions.

The new control tower is operational around the clock, 365 days a year, and oversees ships from all over the world passing through it. The equipment has 26 professionals on call to manage vessels in the Suape waters.

The building, which is located between the internal and external ports, was designed to provide greater support and durability, with its structure made of steel and containers, ensuring greater safety and comfort for all employees who work in traffic control. In addition, the material used is more resistant to salt water and inclement weather.

The new construction is a bold project and will speed up the work carried out by the team working in the control tower. The structure has an area of 269.40 square meters, with three floors, divided into a traffic control room (with a comprehensive view of the sea and screens for monitoring the vessels), a terrace for contemplation of the port, in addition to coordination rooms, administrative and pilotage; parking, pantry, changing rooms, restrooms, employee lounge, archive and information technology rooms; warehouse and guardhouse.

Technological innovation

In addition to port infrastructure improvements, traffic control operations now rely on more advanced technology: the implementation of the Terminals Operating System (TOS), a project developed by the state-owned company in collaboration with CESAR School that integrates all operational processes in the port and increases productivity and control over maritime traffic.

“Data from vessels and the voyages of ships that anchor at Suape are already entered directly into the TOS, avoiding human mistakes and reducing the amount of work for maritime traffic controllers,” explains the director of Port Management, Francisco Martins.
