Cargo handling at the Port of São Francisco do Sul has recorded a momentous milestone, surging to 5 million tonnes in the first four months of 2023, representing a staggering 20.7% year-over-year increase compared to the same period last year (4.1 million tonnes).

This is the largest movement ever recorded in the history of the port complex for the first four months of the year.

The port’s exports totaled 2.8 million tonnes, accounting for a significant 57% of the total goods handled in the 120 days of the year.

Grains, predominantly soy and corn, lead the list of products sent abroad, accounting for 2.6 million tonnes, followed by vegetable oil (100 thousand tonnes) and wood (81 thousand tonnes).

Imports, on the other hand, reached 2.1 million tonnes in these four months, equivalent to 43% of the port’s movement.

The metallurgical sector and fertilizers were the primary goods received from other countries, totaling 1.1 million tonnes and 746 thousand tonnes, respectively.

Governor Jorginho Mello expressed his pride in Santa Catarina’s hardworking and entrepreneurship-driven people and the state’s ability to export to over 170 countries, “The world wants products from Santa Catarina.” To this end, creating the Secretariat of Ports, Airports, and Railways was given particular emphasis.

Cleverton Vieira, the President of the port, highlighted its multipurpose nature and efficiency, with reasonable waiting time for ships to dock, besides presenting agility in loading and unloading cargo operations. He attributed the port’s success to a combination of factors, including its advantageous geographical location, the diversity of cargo handled, and an attractive tariff compared to other nearby ports.

April saw a growth of 12% in the movement of goods at the Port of São Francisco do Sul, reaching 1.3 million tons compared to the same month in 2022. Exports of 793 thousand tonnes were led by soy, while imports were driven by steel and fertilizers, totaling 488,000 tonnes.
