The ports of Paraná have witnessed a record-breaking fertilizer operation, with a single vessel unloading a whopping 70,760 tonnes of ammonium sulfate. The last record-breaking fertilizer operation at the public wharf occurred on April 21 this year when the vessel “CSSC BRIGHT” offloaded 64,199 tonnes.

According to Luiz Fernando Garcia, the president of Portos do Paraná (a state-controlled port authority), the ports of Paranaguá and Antonina serve as the primary gateway for fertilizers entering Brazil, accounting for 27% of all fertilizers that reach the country. “Among the advantages we offer are efficient service delivery, a willingness to engage in dialogue, and one of Brazil’s largest industrial and storage complexes,” he stated.

Currently, the static storage capacity for fertilizers exceeds 3 million tonnes; they can be unloaded at the Port of Paranaguá at three preferential berths on the public (commercial) wharf or any other available berth. Additionally, there are two berths serving the sector on the private pier (Fospar) and two more berths in Antonina.

Gabriel Vieira, the Director of Operations at Portos do Paraná, reported an increase in fertilizer movements at the Paraná ports over the last two months compared to the same period in 2022. In September this year, the volume reached 1,038,445 tonnes, marking an 84.5% growth compared to the same period last year (562,700 tonnes).

“At the beginning of the year, there was a drop in fertilizer movements, which has rebounded over the past two months and is achieving significant results. We expect new records in this segment’s movements,” he emphasized.

Portos do Paraná reports that from January to September 2023, a total of 7.057 million tonnes of fertilizer were handled.
