The Port of Paranaguá has operated a car carrier vessel at one of its public berths for the first time. The berth where the operation took place is usually used for loading grain and bran. As a result all hands on deck were required to optimize the vessel’s stay at the berth and faster loading of vehicles.

The General San Martin arrived at the port on Friday January 31st at about 10:30am. The ship measures 176 meters in length, contains 11 floors for vehicle parking and a capacity of up to almost 4,000 vehicles. “The vessel berthed immediately upon arrival, without having to wait,” said Maurício do Carmo Alves, head of Port Operations at Portos do Paraná.

At the port, the vessel loaded almost 1,900 Renault and Volkswagen cars. According to Alves, adjustments for mooring of the vehicle carrier began as early as Thursday 30th. “We worked together with the vehicle operator, taking measurements. We knew there was space for the ship, but ensuring that the ramp would work well was the priority”, he said.

The Silos Division of Portos do Paraná, were also involved in this special operation. “In the grain export corridor we have six shiploaders and a high movement. This mooring operation was only possible because we spoke with the dry bulk shipping operators and took advantage of the fact that the berth is undergoing maintenance,” explained Gilmar Francener, head of Disilos.
