Port of Paranaguá exports wood without containers

On October 27, the Port of Paranaguá carried out another wooden shipment on a roll-on-roll-off vessel. This is the second time in recent years that the vessel – generally intended to transport vehicles, projects, and machinery – has been used for general cargo. The first time was a test last September.

“This operation was common about 12 or 13 years ago in the Port of Paranaguá. Over time, wood started to be shipped entirely in containers and not directly in the holds of ships”, explains the director of Portos do Paraná, André Pioli.

In July of this year, a cargo of wood was shipped by the Paraná terminal in the ‘break bulk’ modality on a general cargo ship, a rare occurrence. “It is a different operation that meets the demand of exporters given the scarcity of containers available on the market”, he completes.

The first test shipment was made with 190 bales last September 25th. In this week’s operation, there were 484 bales of plywood, totaling 1,450 cubic meters of wood, produced in Santa Catarina and loaded on the Sirius Leader vessel bound for Veracruz, Mexico. The operation was carried out by Marcon.

“The lack of available containers has given rise to new opportunities to return this formerly common type of shipment through the Port of Paranaguá”, says Aldemar Marques Moreira, operations and foreman manager of the Marcon group, in Paranaguá.

And it should go back to being a trend, according to the operator. “The eventual lack of available containers tends to strengthen this type of operation, which is quick and a little cheaper for the exporter. It is possible that we even have new lines coming to Paranaguá. I believe it is here to stay”, he comments.
