Week 202412

The Port of Paranaguá celebrated its 89th anniversary on Sunday (17). With over 6,000 meters of quays and piers, the public company continues to grow in cargo throughput and national prominence alike. The port’s most recent feat is the broken record of 65 million tonnes in cargo handled in 2023.

Nationally speaking, operations with soy-complex cargoes (meal, grains, and oil) stood out in January 2024. According to the Brazilian Foreign Trade Data Query System (Comex Stat), 37.5% of Brazil’s soybean exports were shipped through the Port of Paranaguá. In second place stands the Port of Santos, accounting for 20.9% of the total.

In total, 489 people work at the public company. Jamile dos Santos Faustino, a port agent for four years and six months, is part of this team. Paranagua-born, daughter, and granddaughter of stevedores, she always dreamed of working at Portos do Paraná and now works in the leasing department.

“I like what I do, I feel like I’m where I really wanted to be. And for me, it’s a great experience. I always heard my father and grandfather talk about the port. So, it’s been a dream since childhood, you know, to be here,” said Jamile.

Expectations for the future

The Port of Paranaguá continues to operate at full steam with an eye on new records. “The growth target for 2024 is 2% to 3% beyond 2023 throughput. It’s an ambitious goal, but we remain confident, focusing on logistical intelligence and investments,” highlighted the president.

Among the investments are leases in the port area. Recently, in November 2023, the area PAR-09 was auctioned to the Investment Fund Q-PAR09. The company is expected to invest R$ 910 million in infrastructure improvements over the next five years and generate 150 direct jobs. New auctions are expected to take place later this year.

Port Race

In addition to investments in cargo operations, Portos do Paraná wants to strengthen its relationship with the surrounding community. One of the actions is the Port Race, which takes place at the Port of Paranaguá’s quays, and already has a set date: June 9th, starting at 7 a.m. The organizers exptect to receive 1,500 people across four modalities: 5 and 10-kilometer races, a walk, and a children’s circuit. The goal is to attract athletes and families from across the country.
