The Port of Itaqui, located in the state of Maranhão, announced the resurgence of aluminum exports, strengthening its position as a logistics hub. Announced approximately a month ago, the first load of ingots will arrive at the port on Tuesday (12) at berth 99.

The partnership between the Port of Itaqui, G5 Logística, Steinweg, and the Australian mining company South32 stands out for its competitive standing and positive impacts on the aluminum production chain throughout the region. The R$3 billion investment over three years, carried out by the Alumar Consortium, generating 5,500 jobs, has played a crucial role in this success, emphasizing the economic and strategic importance of the sector in the state.

This operation marks a significant milestone for Maranhão, both for Maranhão-produced aluminum and the production chain in the state. This move results from strategic planning conducted by the Government of Maranhão, promoting more and more development, employment, and income.

South32, which led this partnership with the Port of Itaqui, is one of the transnational mining companies in the Alumar consortium, along with Alcoa and Rio Tinto. Currently, 40% of the total aluminum production capacity in Maranhão belongs to the Australian company. The first aluminum export from South32 via the Port of Itaqui estimates a volume between 10 and 15 thousand tons, using the preferred berths for general cargo.

G5 Logística, a logistics company based in Maranhão, in addition to aluminum operations, engages in port activities involving cellulose, copper, and other general cargo at the Port of Itaqui.

It is worth noting that the last export of aluminum ingots through the Port of Itaqui took place in 2013. However, the longstanding partnership between the public port and Alumar dates back to previous years. Between 2001 and 2013, the company exported 2.1 million tons of cargo through the Port of Itaqui.

The Alumar industrial complex, composed of Alcoa, Rio Tinto, and South32, stands out as one of the world’s largest alumina and aluminum producers. According to company data, 92% of its employees are natives of Maranhão.
