The Bureau Veritas Group has assessed the quality of over 135,000 tonnes of S10 diesel received at the Port of Itaqui, produced in the United Arab Emirates and transported to Brazil on the Zumbi dos Palmares oil tanker.

Due to the cargo’s dimensions, the content was distributed among the port terminal and three other vessels, requiring a logistics operation three times larger than usual.

“This was a unique operation for the Port of Itaqui and required a high level of planning. Since Bureau Veritas operates in 14 other major Brazilian ports, our team was able to carry out inspections of all the ships’ tanks and land tanks while supervising four simultaneous landings, with maximum efficiency and safety,” said Guilherme Cauduro, Director of Agribusiness, Food & Commodities at Bureau Veritas.

The Group worked for five uninterrupted days to assess the quality and volume of the largest diesel import in the history of the North/Northeast region of Brazil. During routine operations in the region, the inspection usually ranges from 40 to 50 thousand tonnes and takes about three days to complete.

Bureau Veritas completed the analysis and finished unloading the 135,000 tonnes transported on the Zumbi dos Palmares in just five days, equivalent to 1.7% of diesel imports in 2023.

Samples collected from each of the 13 tanks of the oil tanker were analyzed in Bureau Veritas’ own laboratories in São Luís and Santos, following the criteria established by the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas, and Biofuels (ANP).

Among the aspects verified are density, octane rating, sulfur content, transparency, and impurities. As the reports were issued, confirming the stated quality, the fuel unloading process began.

Part of the fuel, 55,000 tons, was stored in the terminals at the Port of Itaqui itself, while the ships Pine Meadow, Endless Summer, and Sergio Buarque de Holanda received 40,000, 11,000, and 18,000 tonnes, respectively.

The Port of Itaqui is one of the most important in Brazil, with a strategic location for both origin and destination markets, including Europe, North America, and the Panama Canal.
