The state government of Ceará has confirmed the expansion of the Pecém Port Complex, including plans for constructing two offshore piers. The expansion project will focus on creating ripe conditions for grain exports and the creation of renewable energy with wind farms off the Port of Pecém.

The head of the Secretariat for Economic Development and Labor (Sedet), Maia Jr., highlights that the Ceará is working on making the two new piers viable to meet the increased export demand in the grain market and the infrastructure need for clean energy generation parks to drive the creation of the green hydrogen hub.

“We need to expand the infrastructure network to accommodate the increased flow of grains produced outside Ceará. The expansion is required to keep up with this growth and is demanded by the market,” explains Maia Jr.

The first of a series of structural adjustments to the Port of Pecém should come equipped with all due mechanisms to treat, load, unload, and store grains, including large barrels.

The expansion works occur parallel to the Transnordestina railroad’s implementation, whose works will start in Ceará this month, strengthening Ceará’s position as home to a grain terminal.

Further details about the investments, as well as the deadline we can expect the new structures to be completed, cannot yet be revealed.

Both projects are in the planning stages. The feasibility studies for the maritime terminal’s new additions are underway, but the outlook, as disclosed by Maia, is optimistic.

In addition to the new infrastructure, the project also provides for the expansion, automation, and modernization of the existing cargo flow channels at the port terminal.

Green hydrogen hub-focused pier

The second new pier also has a defined focus. According to Maia Jr., the structure will be destined exclusively for creating renewable energy at Pecém.

The pier will act as a base for the pre-assembly of equipment destined for offshore power generation parks. In other words, power generation plants on the high seas, whether using wind, solar or wave power.

“Our focus is to help Pecém keep up with the current development trends,” adds Maia Jr. The project gained further importance after the Brazilian Senate approved a new regulatory framework for offshore energy last week.

“We expect the project to be perfected at the Chamber of Deputies. This is a watershed moment not only for offshore energy but also for the rise of significant industrial actors, as well as an opportunity for job creation, in addition to strengthening the entire hydrogen production chain,” Mays asserts.

Letter

The Pecém Complex, in a letter sent to the European Commission in May this year, adhered to the commitment made by the Port of Rotterdam to deliver 4.6 million tonnes of green hydrogen (H2V) by 2030.
