Paranaguá port receives its largest crane for unloading solid bulk imports

At berth 211 of the Port of Paranaguá, the ship Maria docked, loaded with three large cranes used in port operations. One of the pieces of equipment was unloaded at the terminal in Paraná and will reinforce the operation of unloading solid bulk imports, mainly fertilizers.

The load is classified as special and each crane is a project. The equipment arrive disassembled. The parts are brought into the ship’s hold and, the largest pieces, onto the deck of the vessel. The manufacture is done by the Liebherr company, from Rostock, Germany, the ship’s country of origin.

In Paranaguá, an LHM 550 Mobile Port Crane, a world reference in the segment, was unloaded. According to the company that acquired the equipment, Harbor, a port operator in the Port of Paranaguá, the crane is the only one of its kind, so far, in Paraná and one of the largest in terms of capacity and productivity for unloading bulk in Brazil.

ACQUISITION – As explained by Harbor Operations manager, Douglas Soares Pires, the crane purchased is state-of-the-art equipment. “It has a capacity for 154 tons, at each movement, and a reach of 54 meters, providing greater productivity and service for large Panamax, Post-Panamax and Capesize vessels”, he comments.

With almost 400 tons, the LHM 550 is a crane with four cables, specific for operations with solid bulk. “It’s a modern, productive piece of equipment with high level technology, with an accumulator and electronic energy system, which guarantees better performance, a higher level of safety, movement control, short and productive work cycles”, guarantees the operator.

The Maria is a general cargo ship (breakbulk). Despite being considered small – 151.67 meters long (loa) and 21 meters wide (beam) – it has robust cranes on board and a crew trained to load and unload parts of large proportions, even larger and heavier than cranes that arrived on the trip.
