With one hundred and twenty square meters of working area and the capacity to accommodate 42 Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBCs) on pallet racks, the Paranaguá Container Terminal’s new Waste Center is already operational. The project aims to promote sustainable waste disposal through environmentally and socially aware practices that adhere to the best governance practices. The storage space may be expanded to include an additional 14 IBCs soon.

Assembled in almost 90 days, the containment structure is designed to handle each type of contaminated waste separately, whether liquid, solid, chemical, or hazardous, among others. The Waste Center has the capacity for five containment basins with oily residues and six IBCs in the containment bay. The center also has dedicated bays for storing batteries, lamps, personal protective equipment (PPE), and various types of sacks for dry residues.

These areas have gutters that redirect any residues that may fall from the containers to the correct location. The floor of the Waste Center has also been waterproofed with technologically-enriched material, preventing soil contamination and facilitating cleaning procedures.

As Kayo Zaiats, TCP’s manager of occupational safety, health, and environment, explains, this modern center is equipped with various operational control devices, ensuring excellent performance and preventing contamination. “In addition to protecting the health of our employees, this project aligns with TCP’s goals of preserving the ecosystem around its operating area, taking care of the environment, and the well-being of nearby communities,” notes Zaiats.

Benefits

The collection center will be used to deposit contaminated waste, making sure that all of it gets recycled, treated, or reused. “With individualized storage, the destination according to typology becomes easier, allowing for the best possible disposal while also complying with all legal standards,” adds TCP’s manager of occupational safety, health, and environment.

Waste management, when it comes to ESG, is not just an environmental practice; it is a holistic approach that considers the social impact and governance practices to promote a more sustainable and responsible environment.

For Zaiats, the center’s inauguration is a step forward regarding ESG strategies. After all, the initiative demonstrates the terminal’s awareness of the risks that improperly stored waste causes to its employees and the environment. “It is part of our mission to improve our environmental and social performance,” he concludes.
